Microsoft is finally ending the malware-like trickery from the "Get Windows 10" upgrade offer that's shown to microsoft office 2010 disc and Windows 8.1 users.
Mary Jo Foley reports that a clearer upgrade promotion will unveil this week. It'll have three options "Upgrade now," "Choose time," and "Decline free offer"?awith all of the these options dismissing the update altogether. Critically, pressing the X on the window may have exactly the same effect as the decline option.
This transformation addresses one of the most unpleasant options that come with the promotion: some weeks ago, Microsoft changed the behavior from the X button to make it simply defer the upgrade instead of decline it altogether. This behavior was unlike any reasonable expectations Windows users may have, and resistant to the way the promotion behaved at its introduction.
Microsoft's statement around the change, due to Terry Myerson, executive v . p . from the Windows and Devices Group, reads:
The company will also offer free technical support and assistance with rolling to Windows 7 or 8.1.
The change is really a very long time coming. The aggression of the visio 2010 professional upgrade offer continues to be causing discontent and aoyance since its introduction, even though many people took benefit of the upgrade, there are plenty that do not need it and don't like being nagged by it. Microsoft paid an unhappy upgrader $10,000 after the company was sued for lack of earnings; the new, less aggressive Get Windows 10 promotion should prevent recurrences of this problem.
